Get Fired Up, Then Vote

There is plenty to be fired up about this year, this month, and this week. It’s time we band together or do something about it before it is too late.

The past two weeks have marked many gut-wrenching milestones in the United States. And yet, we continue on as normal in this nation. It was just another historically bad week. This seems to be the lifestyle of Americans lately - well, at least the last four years.

We lost more than 200,000 people from COVID-19 in the U.S..

We lost in the battle of justice for the death of Breonna Taylor.

We lost feminist legend, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

It’s just another historically bad week. These three headlines are the top of the week. I dread the news not being reported; there is always news unreported these days, with the sneaky nature of politicians.

Everything is moving too fast to mourn. The value is not in processing emotions; it’s in toughening up and moving on, which is proven to be horrible for our mental wellbeing. There is a fundamental issue with the ways of our small corner of the world when we cannot process its tragedies because of the fast-paced, move-along nature of our culture.

In the days leading up to writing this post, I knew what I would write. It was in this planning process that I took my moments to mourn. I encourage everyone to do the same; take a moment, and process everything. The results of my reflections:

I still struggle to comprehend how we can lose 200,000 people in 6 months without a pause, a memorial, or a tear.

I am heartbroken for the lack of justice Breonna and her family received, then angry that the only charges against any of the officers were for endangering her white neighbors.

I am furious that when we learned of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s passing, half of our nation’s leaders pounced at the chance to fill her seat on the Supreme Court, while the rest of us feared the future.

I am fed up, so I’m fired up.

We have plenty to be fired up about: institutionalized racism, the lack of cooperation to flatten the curve, the inhumane treatment of human beings in border camps (more than just the non-consensual hysterectomies), large corporations not taking responsibility or doing their part, police brutality backed by the (in)justice system, and, overall, the corruption in our political system - to name a few.

We need to expose ourselves to more information, conduct our research, and spread the word like it matters to everyone. The lack of information circulating about so many important stories is baffling. We need to expose ourselves to a variety of news on a variety of platforms to educate ourselves.

This is my call to my readers:

Please, please, please find something to be fired up about!

Dedicate time to it.

Learn about it.

Teach others.

Vote accordingly.

Fight for social justice, and do it proudly.

Get fired up and vote.
